Blue Light & EMF Questions

How Long Before Bed Should I Stop Using Any Smart Devices or PC’s etc?

Experts recommend that children and teenagers keep screens out of their bedrooms and aim to stop using electronic devices 30 to 60 minutes before bed. These suggestions are also appropriate for adults.

Some people may not be able to remove screens from their bedrooms due to work or family obligations. It is, however, critical to establish a distinct time between device use and sleep. If you must keep your device in your room, consider turning off lights and turning off notifications and place in another area of the room from where you are sleeping where possible.

How Does Technology Affect Sleep?

Screen time before bed has been shown in studies to increase the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, reduce sleep quality, and affect attentiveness the next day. Nightly exposure to light in the evening may increase the risk of certain sleep disorders and cancers in the long run.

The severity of technology’s impact on sleep may vary according to the device and type of use. Studies show that passive use of technology, such as watching a show or listening to music on a device, has a lower impact on sleep than active use, such as playing an interactive game, texting, or video chatting.

Sleep is an important aspect of health.
According to one study, children who spent more time watching television, using a computer, playing video games, or using their cell phones before bedtime not only had poorer sleep quality and quantity, but they were also more likely to be overweight. These children were also more likely to be tired in the morning and skip breakfast, both of which have been linked to weight gain.

How do I stop checking my smartphone within the 1st Hr of the day?

Two Ways to Stop Checking Your Smartphone First Thing in the Morning

Method 1:

Before you go to bed, put your phone in flight mode. This way, when you wake up, you aren’t bombarded with new messages and notifications.

Because I use my phone as an alarm clock, it’s critical that I put it in flight mode. If I don’t do that, I’ll be bombarded with new notifications on my screen, making it ten times more difficult to resist the urge to check them.

You could also try using a traditional alarm clock instead of your smartphone. This way, it will be much less tempting to check your phone first thing in the morning.

Method 2:

Make sure you have alternatives to checking your smartphone. If you don’t have something to replace your smartphone habit with, you’ll quickly become bored and be tempted to check social media or email again.

As a result, make a list of at least seven things you could do instead of checking your smartphone. For example, you could use your extra free time to do the following:

  • Exercising
  • Meditating
  • Making a healthy breakfast
  • Connecting with your kids or spouse
  • Scheduling your day
  • Prioritising your tasks
  • Setting goals
  • Making a cup of coffee

Then, instead of checking your smartphone in the morning, choose one or more of these activities to follow.

Research has found that starting your day in this manner creates a calm feeling and one of being in control.  Coupled with less stress and anxiety. Furthermore, when  days start well, they are much more focused and productive.

Is RF EMF harmful to humans?

Exposure to very high RF intensities can result in heating of biological tissue and an increase in body temperature. Tissue damage in humans could occur during exposure to high RF levels because of the body’s inability to cope with or dissipate the excessive heat that could be generated.

It has been found that RF-EMF can induce changes in central nervous system nerve cells, including neuronal cell apoptosis, changes in the function of the nerve myelin and ion channels; furthermore, RF-EMF act as a stress source in living creatures.

What are the dangers of Blue Light?

The sun regulates the human sleep-wake cycle. When darkness falls, the body produces melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone. Melatonin production ceases during the day, and alertness levels rise in response to light. The human body is most sensitive to blue light, which is used in the majority of modern screen-based devices.

One study compared the sleep patterns of people who read before going to bed. One group of subjects read printed books, while the other used blue-light emitting e-readers. Participants who used light-emitting e-readers took longer to fall asleep, had poorer quality sleep, and reported feeling less alert the next morning, according to the findings.

Blue light is also emitted by household LED lights. Though we do not stare directly into them, as we do phones and other devices, it is important to dim other bedroom lights or switch to warm lighting before sleeping to reduce exposure to blue light.

Why you shouldn’t watch films or play games before sleeping?

Studies have shown that watching films/shows (Especially with stimulating content!) or playing games with exciting or violent content increases heart rate, making it harder to fall asleep and impairs sleep quality.

Reduced Sleep Time

In addition to the effects of blue light and stimulating content, technology use may interfere with sleep time. Generally, sleep hygiene recommendations advise against keeping any electronic devices from the bedroom.

What produces Blue Light?

Blue light, like other visible light colours, is all around you. Blue light is emitted by the sun. Fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs also emit Blue light. Because of the widespread use of light-emitting diode (LED) technology, humans are being exposed to more blue light than ever before.

LED technologies with high levels of blue light are used in computer and laptop screens, flat-screen televisions, cell phones, and tablets.

What does Blue Light do to your eyes?

Structures in your eye protect it from certain types of light. For example, your cornea and lens shield the light-sensitive retina at the back of your eye from harmful UV rays.

Those same structures do not block out blue light. And you’re exposed to a lot of it on a day to day basis as amount of blue light emitted by the sun outweighs that emitted by any single device.

Nonetheless, some eye doctors have expressed concern about blue light exposure from backlit digital screens and devices. This is due to the fact that people spend so much time using them at such close range.

During COVID-19 lockdowns, for example, 32.4% of the study population used a blue-light-emitting device 9 to 11 hours per day, according to a 2020 study. Another 15.5% used the devices 12 to 14 hours per day, indicating a significant increase in screen time, most likely due to changes in how people worked during the pandemic.

Should You Be Worried About EMF Exposure?

We are all accustomed to the electronic conveniences of modern life. Few of us, however, are aware of the health risks caused by the machines that keep our world operating.

Our power lines, smartphones, microwaves, Wi-Fi routers, laptops, and other electronic devices produce a stream of invisible electromagnetic radiation. Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are produced whenever electricity is used, including at home and at work.

Scientists from all over the world are concerned about the potential health dangers of these industries. Many of the standards that are meant to protect us are seriously out-dated and in many cases the research was funded by the same manufacturers providing the technology!

Why shouldn't I pickup my smartphone in the 1st hour of the day?

When you check social media or email, your brain produces a large amount of dopamine, a neurochemical that makes you feel rewarded. Because the brain craves dopamine like an eight-year-old craves sweets, it will stimulate the repetition of behaviours that resulted in the release of dopamine in the first place.

In other words, if you begin your day by mindlessly scrolling through email or social media, your brain will stimulate you to continue doing so throughout the day because it knows it will quickly and easily make you feel good.

Overall, you’re fighting a battle against your brain’s cravings, which isn’t an easy one to win.

So, if you want to avoid priming your brain for distraction, don’t check your phone right after waking up. Instead, begin your day relaxed and calmly. Prepare your brain to become accustomed to lower levels of stimulation.
